Here at Blue Planet Aquarium we’re only a stone’s throw from the heart of Cheshire. Home to wonderful woodlands and bustling towns and cities. So, if you’re looking for somewhere to visit over the next few frosty weekends, wrap up warm because Cheshire has the perfect offering for the whole family.

Whether you’re a bunch of adventurers or you’d prefer to stay close to the city, we’ve got just the guide to give you some inspiration.

Go back in time in Chester

Chester is a truly unique city, absolutely brimming with heritage and history. In amongst the modern bars and restaurants that line the streets are some of the most interesting sites, from the Roman amphitheatre (which is the largest in Britain!), to the 1,000-year old cathedral.

Whether you’re visiting for the day or for a short break, it’s the perfect place to go back in time. No matter the weather, you can walk the city walls and enjoy the views of Chester, or take shelter under the 700-year old shopping Rows that still stand today. You’ll be walking the very same steps that the Romans, Vikings and Normans took!

Of course if Chester’s history isn’t enough, there’s also plenty of modern shops, cafes and restaurants to while away your afternoon.

Wander through Delamere Forest

There’s something quite magical about being outside in the winter, being able to listen to the birds chirping and spotting some of the seasonal flowers starting to come through. You can do all of this and more at Delamere Forest, with plenty of woodland walks and wildlife on offer.

Enjoy a bike ride to keep warm, stop by the café or simply just walk and enjoy the stunning environment around you as you breath in the crisp, wintry air.

Be inspired at Jodrell Bank

If science is more your thing, you won’t be disappointed with a trip to Jodrell Bank. For over 75 years, this observatory has been at the forefront of research and ground-breaking discoveries in the field of astrophysics. It’s an inspirational place to visit whether you’ve got the kids with you or not. Giving you the chance to learn more about its telescopes and findings over the years.

Including both indoor and outdoor exhibitions, not to mention a working model of the solar system. There are also extensive grounds here for the whole family to explore.

Visit a medieval site at Beeston Castle

With truly spectacular views, Beeston Castle sits atop a rocky crag, boasting a 4,000 year history. It’s an incredibly dramatic medieval site, on a clear day you might even be able to see the Welsh mountains. The castle well is said to be the hiding place of Richard II’s lost treasure. The exhibition tells the castle’s story dating back from the Bronze Age.

The castle is also surrounded by unspoiled woodland, which is home to a whole host of wildlife. Don’t forget your coat and binoculars, and who knows what you might see.

See the sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium

Of course, no visit to Cheshire would be complete without a trip to our very own aquarium. Our exhibits are home to one of Europe’s largest collection of sharks. You can see them swimming up close thanks to our underwater tunnel and daily dive shows!

But don’t forget, it’s not all about the sharks – even though they’re really cool. At Blue Planet Aquarium we’ve got a brilliant array of animals to discover, from turtles and snakes to clownfish and piranhas. Complete with café, gift shop and children’s play area, it’s set to be a perfect family day out.

Which Sea Creature Are You? https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/people/which-sea-creature-are-you/ Fri, 22 Sep 2023 09:34:27 +0000 https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/?p=10677 Continued]]> Obsessed with all the different sea creatures floating around across the world? We get it – sometimes we prefer them to people! From pufferfish to piranhas, they all have their own distinct personalities and quirks. And if you’re fascinated by how we compare to them, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve created a quiz that lets participants find out which sea creature they’re most like, considering some of the biggest parts of their personalities.

Ready to delve into our findings and find out which popular sea creatures at Blue Planet Aquarium have the most relatable personalities? Dip into our research below and find out – you can even take our quiz for yourself at the end!

Our Method

We created a fun quiz filled with questions to find out more about your behaviour and personality traits. Whether you’re introverted or extroverted, idle or determined, creative or athletic, your answers will pair you up with the sea creature you’re most like personality-wise.

We then took the answers our participants gave and collected them to give us our results. It’s that simple!

Overview of the different personalities

From gentle stingrays to energetic clownfish, discover each of the distinct personalities of some of the wonderful sea creatures below.

Giant Pacific Octopus

Much like the giant Pacific octopus, you’re a little on the shy side, and consider yourself an introvert. You prefer the night time to mornings, and sometimes only leave the comfort of your home if it involves food! You like to blend into the crowd (some may say you even ‘camouflage’ yourself), and you’re super-intelligent and great at problem-solving.

Stingray

Similar to the stingray, you’re a gentle being who avoids confrontation and are pretty laid back. You can be social but also like having time to yourself, and it’s safe to say you’re not a morning person.

Eel

Much like the Moray Eel, you’re an introvert and consider yourself shy. However, when it comes to working, you’re a team player and work really well with others. You’re not confrontational and you have a unique sense of style.

Clownfish

Just like the clownfish, you’re energetic, confident and have a great imagination. You’re sociable and pride yourself on having a unique style. You are good at problem-solving and thrive in the daytime.

Pufferfish

Much like a pufferfish, you aren’t afraid to stand up for yourself and like to portray yourself as a tough cookie. You prefer to be alone rather than socialise and are more of a night owl than a morning person. Although some may say you’re a little unpredictable, one thing’s for sure, you’re a true romantic!

Piranha

You’re a super social being, just like the red bellied piranha! Despite being a little shy, you love to be around other people – you even like to share your food. You have a unique style and prefer day to night – probably so people can see your fun outfits!

Sand Tiger Shark

Despite what people may think, you are a relaxed and gentle person who’s a little bit shy. You’re athletic and don’t care much for your appearance. You prefer night over day and love a midnight snack. One thing you like to do is travel!

Key findings

So, what were the main findings of our quiz? Are more people similar to eels or clownfish? Or is the giant Pacific octopus the more common personality? Dive into our results below!

Sea Creature Results

First up, almost 1 in 3 (32%) participants’ personalities matched up with the ‘Giant Pacific Octopus’. These people are typically a little on the shy side, prefer night over day, like blending into a crown and are great problem-solvers!

Meanwhile, just under 30% of personalities matched with a ‘Stingray’. Anybody that matches up with this sea creature is a gentle soul who generally avoids confrontation, enjoys being social but also likes time to themselves. Just like the ‘Giant Pacific Octopus’ personality, they’re also night owls.

Just over 1 in 10 participants matched with the personality of an ‘Eel’. The eel personality is more introverted and shy, but that doesn’t stop them from getting stuck into some teamwork. Their sense of style is usually unique, too!

Following closely, slightly less than 1 in 10 of our participants were most similar to our ‘Clownfish’ personality type. The complete opposite of most of our other creatures, these are energetic, confident, social and early risers.

‘Pufferfish’ relate to 6.70% of our quizzers. These creatures aren’t afraid to stand up for themselves, prefer solitude to social settings and are true romantics. They’re also big fans of the night time.

Our second to last most matched personality was the ‘Piranha’, which over 6% of participants were similar to. While these are on the shy side, they also love hanging around with others, have a unique sense of style and prefer working at night time.

The least commonly matched personality was the ‘Sand Tiger Shark’, with only 3.70% of participants being most like these relaxed and gentle creatures. They have a more athletic nature, don’t really care about their appearance and prefer staying up late over waking up early.

Key Personality Traits

Getting into the nitty-gritty, we’ve collected the results on the most common traits of our quiz takers. We have to say – the results are very interesting.

When completing tasks, nearly 4/10 (37.90%) quiz takers would describe themselves as being efficient. Meanwhile, almost a quarter of the participants (24.10%) would say they’re more determined.

A massive 44.40% of participants revealed that they are more of an introvert, and just over 1 in 10 (10.10%) said that they are more extroverted. 45.50% said they are ‘in between’.

The majority of participants said that their style is to blend into the crowd (39.10%) – this could be because many of our participants describe themselves as introverted. Nearly 3 in 10 people claim that they like to have a unique sense of style (29.20%).

It was a close call on the question about which time of day the participants prefer! 46.40% of quiz takers claim to be an early bird, compared to the 53.60% who say they are night owls. So, we’ve got more night time people on our hands here.

The majority of quiz takers said they are both social and unsocial (41.80%), while 8/10 participants don’t describe themself as confrontational (82.10%). We’re not surprised considering how few people are more social.

When it came to the best trait, it was much more of a mixed bag. 4/10 said their best trait was their intelligence (40.20%), while 29% would say that their creativity was one of their best traits. Meanwhile, a good majority said their best trait was how fun they are (28.30%).

Key Trait Comparisons

So how do the key traits compare among the quizzers? The key stats are swimming around below…

 • Only 3.20% of people said they ‘like to look tough’ when describing their style. However, only 43% of these people who ‘like to look tough’ admitted to being confrontational, whereas the other 57% said they were not.
 • Creative individuals appear to be night time people (55%) over morning people (45%), which could be because their best creative ideas come at night time.
 • Out of everyone who ‘likes to blend into the crowd’, almost half (49%) said that they are introverted, 46% say they are ‘in between being an introvert and extrovert’ and only 5% would class themself as extroverted.
 • 4 in 10 people (40%) who chose their best trait as being ‘fun’ also stated that they are social.
 • 14% of people with a ‘unique style’ are extroverts, 38% are introverted and the majority with 48% are in between.
 • 73% of the people whose best traits involve being athletic are more of a morning person. Could this be because they include a morning workout each day to spark their productivity? We think so!

If all this talk about Eels and Stingrays has you itching to see some incredible sea creatures, then why not plan your next visit to Blue Planet Aquarium? We’re ready when you are!

8 Family Days Out in the North West https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/people/8-family-days-out-in-the-north-west/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 14:57:08 +0000 https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/?p=10412 Continued]]> The summer holidays are upon us, and that means the great scramble to fill six weeks with fun stuff has begun. Lucky for you, we’re here to lend a helping hand with our guide to eight family days out in the North West.

From seaside trips to unforgettable attractions, there’s plenty to keep the kids occupied right on your doorstep. We’ve included a real mixed bag here, including free day-out ideas and activities suitable for toddlers, so you can bust boredom and add a few to your holiday itinerary.

Sound good? Then let’s jump straight into it.

1. Book your visit to Blue Planet Aquarium

Forgive us for prioritising self-promotion, but in our book, Blue Planet is the definitive day out here in the North West. Who doesn’t love spotting their favourite fish from the spectacular showcase of marine critters on display? It’s ideal for toddlers, teens and chaperoning adults alike. And best of all? It’s all under cover – good news given the summer we’re having.

Plan your visit and book your tickets to Blue Planet Aquarium here.

2. Hike through Beacon Fell Country Park

Fresh air? Tick. Wildlife? Tick. Adventure? Nailed on. And did we mention that Beacon Fell Country Park offers free admission, too? Talk about ticking all the boxes. This sprawling woodland is paradise found for gadabout families, with acres of moorland, forest, and farmland to explore on your own two feet. All you need now is a break in the weather to make the most of this brilliant free North West attraction.

3. Take advantage of free museum and gallery spaces

If there’s one thing the North West does well it’s free cultural attractions, including museums, galleries and visitor centres. There is the Tate Gallery at the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, which is entirely free. You can also stop by the neighbouring Maritime Museum too! It makes for a great day out, come rain or shine. Most of them are super child-friendly too, so the little ones shouldn’t take too much convincing. For a complete list of free attractions in the North West, we’d recommend this essential guide.

4. Make a splash at Cheshire Aqua Park

Are the kids not all that enthusiastic about the sound of yet another museum or gallery? Treat them to a day they definitely won’t complain about with a visit to the brilliant Cheshire Aqua Park. This open-air water park features a Total Wipeout-style assault course where young children and teens alike can test their poise, speed and balance without tumbling into the drink. Wet suits and buoyancy aids are included in the price of your ticket, making it a reasonable day out that’s worth it for the brownie points you’ll receive in return.

5. Hit the beach – and not just for the sunbathing

Here in the North West, we’re lucky to have some spectacular British beaches on our doorstep, including Blackpool, St Anne’s, Formby, and West Kirby to name but a few. There’s a lot more to do on these golden stretches of sand than simply sunbathe, whether that’s hitting the arcades, enjoying a paddle or rock pooling by the shoreline (something we know plenty about). Even when the weather’s not so beachy, there’s always something to see and do at the seaside, so if you need some last-minute day trip inspiration, this is a safe bet.

6. Book your place at the National Football Museum

If your kids are counting the days until the new season starts, why not ramp up the excitement a notch with a visit to Manchester’s inimitable National Football Museum? Documenting the beautiful game from its inception to the present day. This is an absolute must-visit attraction in the North West for the football crazies in your household. Expect tons of footie artefacts and exhibits, as well as plenty of interactive displays and activities that younger visitors will enjoy.

7. Enjoy some peace and quiet at the Dubwath Silver Meadows Wetland

Whether you’re holidaying in the Lakes or live close by, a visit to the Dubwath Silver Meadows Wetland could be a welcome reprieve from Cumbria’s more bustling spots. Located at the end of Bassenthwaite Lake, this peaceful nature reserve is teeming with birdlife, making it the ideal choice for animal-loving youngsters. And best of all? Visitors are encouraged to keep the noise down so as not to disturb nesting birds – music to the ears of at-breaking-point parents in need of some respite.

8. Talk a walk on the wild side at Adventure Now

From driving quad bikes to trying your hand at archery; firing pistols to savouring a campfire lunch; there’s virtually no limit to the outdoor activities on offer at Adventure Now. Nestled in a secluded spot on the outskirts of Manchester, this dedicated site is overseen by a team of experts, always on hand to offer safety advice and equipment demonstrations. If you’re looking for days-out in the North West that are off the beaten path, you’ve just hit the jackpot.

We hope this guide has provided some fuel for thought on how best to spend time as a family this summer and beyond. If you’re hoping to visit Blue Planet Aquarium during the six-week holiday, be sure to plan your visit and book your tickets in advance.

Phil Verbinnen, General Manager says…

‘My favourite animal in the aquarium is our Port Jackson sharks. Why… Like me, they are relatively new to Blue Planet Aquarium and as such were the first species that I’ve seen arrive at Blue Planet Aquarium all the way through their quarantine and on to display in the reef section of our main tank. Whilst in quarantine, they were super interactive, and it’s great now seeing them on display interacting with our junior divers’

Our Port Jackson Sharks can found in our Ocean Exhibit!

Steff Cook, Guest Experience, Conservation & Education Manager says…

‘Mine is Marty our Zebra Shark. Zebra sharks always look like they are smiling! They remind me of puppies or cats, playful with the divers and love attention!

Their barbells at the end of their nose look similar to whiskers too, which help them in detecting prey. Plus, who doesn’t love a leopard print pattern!’

Marty can be found in our Ocean Exhibit!

Andrew Hopwood, Deputy & Retail Manager says…

‘A Chameleon to be precise – I like to believe we are both very similar.

We take things nice and steady. We watch from a distance and make relevant judgements and the best attribute being we can adapt to the environment we find ourselves!’

This sneaky Chameleon can be found at our Frog Zone Area!

Mike Cullimore, Catering Manager says…

‘My favourite fish id the Picasso Trigger Fish. It’s flamboyant, it can make a grunting sound when it feels threatened and it often has a fun and interesting personality.’

These beautiful fish can be found at our Coral Cave Exhibit!

Dave O’Hare, Curator & Zoological LSS Coordinator says…

‘My favourite animal would be my namesake, Dave, our best-looking Sand Tiger shark! It was a career highlight, successfully introducing Dave to our group of Sand Tigers.’

What a Curator does and why it’s important https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/people/what-a-curator-does-and-why-its-important/ Fri, 15 Apr 2022 09:15:21 +0000 https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/?p=7023 Continued]]> Curator removing stitches from a snake

Meet Dave. He has a very important job. He is the Curator of Blue Planet Aquarium.

What is a Curator?

Firstly, it might be worth us asking the question, what is a Curator? The dictionary definition is “the custodian of a collection.” That’s exactly what they do in Blue Planet. The Curator oversees the well-being of all the animals at the aquarium and is directly responsible for our team of aquarists and divers.

What does a Curator do?

So, with that answered we can move on to what a Curator does. Day-to-day, it’s ensuring the animals are healthy and well cared for. Their enclosures and tanks are kept in the best possible condition. Provide enrichment and stimulation to ensure the animals are happy. All while coordinating a team of aquarists or animal care professionals to achieve these aims.

Animal Welfare

The animal residents are the number one priority in every decision Blue Planet make. The role encompasses a lot, it certainly keeps Dave busy. One day he may be removing stitches from a Copperhead Viper that has recently had surgery, the next he may be putting on his scuba gear to look after the Sand Tiger Sharks in our Ocean Exhibit. It’s safe to say the role is central to the running of the Aquarium.

Want to be a Curator?

I asked Dave what his advice would be to anyone looking to become the Curator of an aquarium. “It’s important to study animals in further education, as well as useful skills that are important to the role, such as plumbing.”

He goes on to say “Jump at every opportunity to gain experience within the animal industry. I worked with lions for two years and learnt a lot of transferable skills. It’s very important to have a passion and commitment to animal welfare.”

Exciting and challenging

Curators can face pretty unique challenges. Imagine if you had to transport a shark across the country, set up a temporary quarantine home for it and then ensure it is fit and healthy enough to join its friends in the exhibit tank. Where would you even begin? Well, these are the sort of things Curators need to consider. The rewards are pretty great though. Take a look at Dave the Curator, releasing Dave the Sand Tiger Shark into our massive Ocean Exhibit tank.

The scuba divers of Blue Planet https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/dives/scuba-divers/ Thu, 14 Apr 2022 16:04:29 +0000 https://www.blueplanetaquarium.com/?p=7001 Continued]]> Danger shark tank sign in aquarium

Scuba divers of Blue Planet Aquarium

If you’re like me, you may be curious about what Scuba Divers in a place like Blue Planet Aquarium actually get up to. Being in the fortunate position of already working in the aquarium, I asked if I could help the dive team for a day. In this post, I’ll share what I learned throughout the day.

Dive supervisor

I followed Sophie, one of our divers who was “Dive Supervisor” for the day. This means she was the person responsible for that day’s diver activities, records, and diver safety. Being a diver at Blue Planet is quite a varied job and doesn’t always mean being in the water, the Dive Supervisor is responsible for the days out of water tasks.

First things first

Our day started in the Food prep area of the aquarium. Whilst the other divers got into their wet suits, we prepared some tasty treats for the fish! This is where accurate record-keeping starts to become important. Preparing the correct weight of food for each of the fish being fed that day. Then recording it. This ensures the food is kept balanced and interesting. It also makes sure the fish are receiving the correct amount. Then prepare the feed for some of the smaller fish, which are fed all at once in a “scatter feed”.

Feeding the fish

Once the food is prepared we make a note of what each animal is being fed. Sophie relayed this to the SCUBA divers. Which makes them aware of what each fish has to eat that day. So that we can figure out how much each fish has eaten. Entering this into the notes for the day, so we can keep an eye on eating behaviours. We also keep an eye out for animal behaviour that may be out of the ordinary. What quickly became clear to me was the diver’s connections to the different animals within the aquarium. They do get to know their personalities.

SCUBA divers’ gear

In addition to wet suits, the SCUBA divers wear a Buoyancy Control Device (BCD). Which is a harness style vest, that they can inflate with air from their cylinders when they need to ascend. Attached to their BCD is their main cylinder, filled with compressed air and a smaller yellow cylinder called a Pony. The Pony is to be used in emergencies when the diver or one of their dive partners needs air.

Scuba diver gear

Attached to their tanks are the regulators, which control the airflow whilst breathing underwater. These are sometimes part of a full facemask or standalone and paired with a half facemask, depending on the diver’s preference. The dive supervisor will make a log of the gear each diver is using and the air pressure currently in their cylinders. Next, if they’re feeding, come the gloves. First, is a white cotton glove for comfort next is a chainmail one for protection and on top goes an elasticated glove with a coating for grip. This protects the diver’s hands from the Stingrays and Sharks’ mouths, whilst making sure they can keep their grip on the feed.

SCUBA Divers in our shows. They’re more than just cool to watch.

Once in the water, the divers head over to the Aquatheatre. Where they do the first dive show of the day. There are always at least two SCUBA divers. One doing the feeding and one safety diver. They keep an eye out for any drifting Sand Tiger Sharks that are coming close. It’s the shark’s home and the divers need to move out of the way. As visitors take their seats on the dry side of the massive acrylic window, the divers already know which Stingrays to feed and how much they’re supposed to eat that day. Although the show can look hectic, when the divers resurface after it, they’re able to tell us exactly which Rays have eaten by their names.

Nurse shark near surface

Time to feed some sharks

Part of the Dive Supervisor role that day was to feed the Blacktip Reef Sharks, which was a highlight of the day for me as I got to do it! First, I attached the feed to a target. I lowered this into the water for the sharks to eat. Watching them swim up and grab the food was fun. As one of our SCUBA divers said, it feels a bit like reverse fishing!

The SCUBA divers daily jobs

As the divers of Blue Planet, the team are responsible for a lot of the upkeep of the aquarium’s exhibits. As well as feeding they also clean. They scrub algae from the inside of the glass and the walls. Even vacuum the floor of the exhibits to remove fish waste. All whilst respecting the animals of the exhibit, it’s important to remember the animals always have right of way! They’ll also maintain their diving equipment, refill air tanks, scrub salt from the fittings around our exhibits and train and escort divers on Blue Planet’s Shark Diving Experiences.

End of the day

At the end of the day the divers, will change, clean off and head home. The Dive supervisor will make any final notes on anything that happened that day, feeding habits, animal behaviours, equipment irregularities, and tasks completed. Lastly, clean up the containers for the animal’s food. When they’re done, it’s time to head home! It was a highly enjoyable day and a privilege to work with the dedicated people of the Blue Planet dive team and to work first-hand with the amazing animals that call the Aquarium home.

We are elated to re-open and welcome visitors to once again to admire the wonders of the deep from across the World’s waters – all set just off the motorway next to Cheshire Oaks!

We are open everyday except Christmas Day.

Our opening hours are:
10am-5pm (last entry 4pm) Daily
• Christmas Eve we close at 4pm (last entry 3pm)
• Mon 28th and Tue 29th Dec we close at 6pm (last entry 5pm)
